“Meaningful Use” and Physician Incentives
Travis Broome, MPH, MBA, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Special Assistant for Quality Improvement and Survey & Certification
The America Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 established financial incentives for physicians using EHR technology. The requirement to receive these payments is tied to a level of functional use of the EHR, labeled “meaningful use.” This session will describe the Medicare and Medicaid incentive programs, who is eligible and the EHR utilization requirements to receive funding. 1 CME and CNE credit hour
|
Electronic Prescribing
Bobby W. Davis, Account Executive, Pharmacy Customer Relations, Surescripts
Prescription medications are an increasingly important component of the treatments physicians can offer patients. Concerns about growing spending on prescription pharmaceuticals and potential issues regarding safety/drug interactions have also raised concerns. This session will discuss one of HIT’s first clinically focused applications—e-prescribing. It will describe the history of this sector, current work associated with completing the development of standards, federal financial incentives and the differences between various technologies that can accomplish the goal of automating the prescribing process. 1 CME and CNE credit hour

Workflow and Office Redesign
Christine Allen, RN, CPHQ Senior Quality Improvement Consultant, TMF Health Quality Institute
Someone once said, “If you automate a bad process, what you will have is an automated bad process.” One of the most important considerations when adopting EHR technology is how this will affect current office processes such as scheduling, documentation, medication management and patient flow. This session will identify the top provider care delivery issues to tackle in workflow analysis, discuss how workflow analysis can improve patient safety and quality and define performance improvement and the components of the model for improvement. 1 CME and CNE credit hour
|
Health Information Exchange
Bryan K. White, MHA Executive Director, North Texas Accountable Healthcare Partnership HIE
With the exception of large integrated delivery networks, most health care enterprises deliver only a portion of the medical care received by patients. In order to create a true longitudinal record, health information exchanges (HIEs) that can capture and integrate data from all relevant sites of care are needed. This session will discuss the different HIE architectures, challenges in developing a sustainable business case with HIEs, the different technology platforms now in development and the current state of implementation in Texas. 1 CME and CNE credit hour
|
|
4:30 – 5:30 p.m.

HIPAA and Security
Jill Berry, RN, BSN, JD, CSC Director of Compliance, Health Texas Provider Network at Baylor Health Care System
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 introduced changes to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and security requirements beginning in 2009. This session will discuss those changes as well as HIPAA and security considerations for EHR adoption. 1 CME and CNE credit hour

Mike Alverson, North Texas Regional Extension Center
Jonathan Ishee, JD, GuldCoast Regional Extension Center
Billy Phillips, PhD, West Texas Regional Extension Center
This session will identify the purpose of Regional Extension Centers and how they can facilitate provider selection, adoption and implementation of EHRs, as well as how Regional Extension Centers can help physicians obtain incentive payments provided by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for “meaningful use” of EHRs.
