Nursing Informatics in a “Meaningful Use” World
Mari Tietze, PhD, RN-BC, FHIMSS Associate Professor, Texas Woman’s University, T. Boone Pickens Institute of Health Sciences-Dallas Center, The Houston J. and Florence A. Doswell College of Nursing
Donna Montgomery, RN-BC, BSN, MBA Baylor University Health System, System Director of Nursing/Patient Care Informatics
Juliana Brixey, PhD, MPH, RN Assistant Professor and Gulf Coast Regional Extension Center Operations Manager for Outreach and Education

“Meaningful use” of electronic health records (EHR) has created an unprecedented focus within the health information technology (HIT) industry. Although nursing has long been focused in this way, integration of nursing’s role in evolving “meaningful use” EHR activity is in development. The purpose of this session is to provide the attendee with knowledge about nursing informatics, the role of nursing informatics in meaningful deployment and the delivery of nursing informatics in clinical, administrative and academic settings. The complexities and cautions associated with EHR-based meaningful implementation will be addressed throughout the discussion. 4 CME and CNE credit hours

Topics include:

  • Nursing informatics and “meaningful use” – What’s it all about?
  • Real world implementation of an EHR system
  • Nurses’ role in workflow analysis and improvement
  • Improving outcomes through HIT vendor relationships
  • Practice and academia: a unifying approach to prepare nurses for HIT
  • Patient safety and quality in the changing world of EHR – panel discussion, questions, answers and next steps

Introduction to Process Mapping and Workflow Analysis

Robert Ligon Lecturer, Health Information Technology Program, The University of Texas at Austin College of Natural Sciences, School of Biological Science
Christine Allen, RN, CPHQ Senior Quality Improvement Consultant, TMF Health Quality Institute
Penny Crow, RHIA, CEO/Chief Strategist, Operational Strategies.

This seminar will provide health care professionals and support staff with tools and techniques to perform basic workflow mapping and evaluation using flow charts, optimization strategies and LEAN methodology. One of the most important considerations when introducing EHR technology into a practice setting is how it will affect the current workflow of the practice and the care patients receive. Tools within the EHR allow clinicians and their support staff to optimize workflow involving patient scheduling, patient flow, medication management, point-of-care documentation and other care management processes.

Interoperability Workshop

Jerry Malone, Vice President, Sandlot, LLC
Nick Bonvino, National Practice Leader, Northside Business Consulting, Inc.

This session will discuss the Texas HIE plan, as well as HIE standards for data transmission, including HL7, DICOM, continuity of care record and continuity of care document. The business case for HIE, or interoperability, and strategies for interoperability with labs, pharmacies and hospitals without an EHR will also be discussed.

Considerations for Rural and Urban HIT Deployment in Texas
Shannon Calhoun, Executive Director, Southeast Health System

The purpose of this forum is to identify the implications to a Regional Extension Center and/or HIE for rural versus urban populations, considering cost, workflow, implementation, training, support and sustainability. This session will be held as a workgroup to identify a rural plan.

Workflow and Office Redesign

Christine Allen, RN, CPHQ Senior Quality Improvement Consultant, TMF Health Quality Institute

Someone once said, “If you automate a bad process, what you will have is an automated bad process.” One of the most important considerations when adopting EHR technology is how this will affect current office processes such as scheduling, documentation, medication management and patient flow. This session will identify the top provider care delivery issues to tackle in workflow analysis, discuss how workflow analysis can improve patient safety and quality and define performance improvement and the components of the model for improvement. 1 CME and CNE credit hour

Health Information Exchange

Bryan K. White, MHA Executive Director, North Texas Accountable Healthcare Partnership HIE

With the exception of large integrated delivery networks, most health care enterprises deliver only a portion of the medical care received by patients. In order to create a true longitudinal record, health information exchanges (HIEs) that can capture and integrate data from all relevant sites of care are needed. This session will discuss the different HIE architectures, challenges in developing a sustainable business case with HIEs, the different technology platforms now in development and the current state of implementation in Texas. 1 CME and CNE credit hour
